On May 21st each year since 2019, the United Nations General Assembly has designated International Tea Day, which celebrates tea to make value to the economy, society and culture. It is also the first international festival established in the agricultural field that was led and boosted by China and other tea-producing countries.

Tea has its roots in China. Today it has grown to be a worldwide favorite. Author Lu Yu, Patron Saint of Tea, wrote in The Classic of Tea (Cha Jing), “Tea as a beverage, starts from Shennong (the God of Farming and Agriculture, or Divine Farmer).” The consumption of tea as a beverage can be traced back to ancient China thousands of years ago, where it later emerged as a masterpiece of man’s interaction with nature. Across centuries, tea has borne witness to China’s long history and rich cultural heritage.

Starting with the Tang Dynasty’s method of boiling tea, evolving to the Song Dynasty’s method of whisking tea, and to the more contemporary technique of brewing tea since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Chinese people have inherited and advanced a rich and diverse array of tea-processing techniques and customs. This has resulted in the creation of a vast and profound Chinese tea culture, which continues to captivate and enchant connoisseurs of tea worldwide.

Tea has long been embedded in the collective DNA of the Chinese people, passed down from generation to generation and is present in their daily lives, rituals and festivities. Through the delicate art of tea-making, tea-drinking, and tea-tasting, the Chinese have cultivated an inclusive attitude and a humble, gentle character. As the “national drink”, tea serves as a profound reflection of the Chinese people’s rich and optimistic spiritual world, and an enduring symbol of their vibrant and dynamic culture.

More than a delicious beverage, tea serves also as a bridge and bond between China and the world. Throughout history, Chinese tea has traveled across borders on land and by sea via the Silk Road to promote the exchanges and mutual learning of diverse civilizations. Today, tea remains a symbol of values such as “harmony in diversity” and “beauty in sharing”, fostering cultural interaction and mutual trust between China and Europe.
